Hey everyone! With this first post, my blog is officially open~!
Yesterday we started a new project, which is all very exciting of course!
At the introduction Monday morning, we were told we have to make a game for Spilgames. Personally I think that sounds pretty cool, though it also sounds really complicated.
I didn't get to worry too much about how complicated it will be, though, as we still had to form project groups. We started dividing our community in three groups - Teen, Family and Girls - by making everyone choose what group they'd rather make a game for. That really concluded how the group I'm part of was formed, as only six people wanted to make a game for girls :).
We decided on a name for our group, after a lot of bickering. Since we're C4D (Community 4, group D), we decided to call ourselves UCD, which is short for Unicorn Creative Design. Then everyone went and designed some logo's, though we haven't chosen which one we'll use yet.
That's really all we did on Monday.
Tuesday, or today, began with our group gathering and discussing the rules, like when we'd be at school and things we weren't allowed to do. Afterwards we played a game to become a better team, which was funny, actually. There were very silly questions, like 'if you had to spend six months on an uninhabited island, which group member would you want to take with you?'
After that we tried to do a bit of research, but we were still unsure how to start that since we'd been told something about 'Design Science', but weren't quite sure what it was. Not much later, we got a lecture on that. Apparently Design Science means you have to get to know your target group really well. In fact, you have to start loving your users.
You divide the progress of making a product not in research, developing a concept, design and production, but you divide it in iterations. Granted, in those iterations you research, make a concept, you design and you produce, but not as extensively as you normally would.
It also includes a lot of contact with your target group, since you'll have to make sure the product you make fulfils their needs. The product you make in each iteration will be a paper prototype, which you then show your target group. You'll 'research' their reaction to your prototype and you find out how much they like it, then you edit it where necessary.
Or something like that, anyway. I'm not completely sure, but that's what I made out of the information we got. I'm pretty sure my thoughts on it will change as we go through the process, though, and that it will become a little clearer. Honestly, the whole progress is still kind of confusing to me.
After the lecture, we ended our day by going to the MacDonalds with our group and a few others. That's also an activity for teambuilding, seeing as you get to hang out in an environment that's different than school. It was fun, and I'm looking forward to working together with my teammates to make a hopefully amazing game! :)
